Osa Resort Club's Fishing Report...

"WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE"
OSA STYLE!!!

To fish with the Osa Resort Club team, you are fishing with the regions, most Experienced and Professional Captains and Crews, in the Fishing Capital of Costa Rica. Our Captains and Crews are Tournament seasoned, World Class Fisherman, with the exceptional knowledge and skills it takes to deliver our guests the best opportunities to catch Trophy Big Game fish, and enjoy high success rates on the water.

We had John O'Donnell and 4 of his business associates down for 2 days of fishing on the Two Dogs and The Bottom Line. The morning bite was a little slow, but in the afternoon we found the bait balls and there was plenty of action. Both boats had sailfish, dorado to 40lbs, and some tuna to 50lbs.

NiceWe hit our inshore spot at the end of the day and bagged 4 snapper and a roosterfish. We had a national geographic moment on the last day we were stopped in the middle of a huge bait ball offshore watching giant manta rays zooming through the bait ball feeding. Then a school of 20 dorado 30 to 40lbs showed up just behind the boat. My mate Juan flipped out two live baits on the spinners and a double hook up on dorado.

I was marking large fish on the recorder so we dropped 2 live baits on the 50 wides down deep and a double hook up on yellowfin tuna. We got cut off by the feeding manta rays on one tuna and boated one 50lbs. It was late in the day and the clients had a plane to catch so we had to leave the feeding frenzy.

We also saw 2 big blue marlin free jumping in the area but no takers on marlin. I have been marking loads of bait for the past 3 weeks everywhere offshore. I have not seen that kind of bait in a long time, I think we are in for some banner fishing here on the OSA.

Spring Wrap Up

What an incredible year we have had thus far, here we are – the end of May and you know what that means, the “Big Daddy’s” Blue Marlins and Tuna are back in town! If the first few months of this year will serve as any type of an indicator for what lies ahead, then these up-coming months are going to be “doozies” You had better hang on and have a good grip on that pole!!!

The numbers of Sailfish we’ve released in the past few months have given us quite a run for our money. After arm wrestling those rascals all day we found ourselves completely exhausted and in search of a change up. We normally go looking for floating tree trunks, limbs, weed lines, etc to roust up a few Dorado’s, the past few months have been absolutely remarkable, there has been no need to “search”
they’ve been everywhere, we never pass on the opportunity to “take home the bacon”, nothing beats Dorado for dinner, I don’t care who you are. I never thought I would say “I never want to eat another piece of fish” but here I am! As for myself, my favorite is stopping off towards the end of the day to slow things down just a bit and do some bottom fishing.Thankfully many others feel the same way so we do this quite often.

The bottom structure closer in towards home have been teaming with critters, a few different varieties of Grouper, a few African Pompano, the Cubera Snapper have been plentiful, a 70 lb Rooster came home with us last week for dinner. Rooster fish have been on the prowl for anything and everything to eat. Nothing fights more than a Monster Rooster Fish. We’ve been releasing Roosters averaging upwards in the 45 to 55lb range. Then, just when you least expect it, an Amber Jack swoops in, an SMACK!, performs a drive by on you and all just to test our physical fitness!

In all, the past several weeks have been a fantastic experience for everyone, the boat ride back to the lodge gave us plenty of time to sit back, reflect on our day, take in the beautiful scenery, the beaches, the lava colored sand that lines the beach at the entrance of the Gulfo Dulce. The surf is incredible to witness. I understand why Surfer Dudes come from all over the world to experience what is “one of the longest rips in the world”.

Once back at the lodge, tranquility is the only thing that comes to mind as we enjoy the pool, sip our refreshments and watch the Monkeys and Exotic Birds play in the trees. Boy the Howler Monkeys sure raise a ruckus…How can anything that small make so much noise!

This calendar is a general guideline as to what has proven to be the better times of the year for certain species; however, “All the species can be caught year round”.
